How to enter Wicked Brush

Wicked Brush takes place at Ironweld and Everwinter. To enter, pick up a Wicked Brush ticket at at checkout. Each entry requires a separate Wicked Brush ticket. Multiple entries encouraged. No single model can compete in multiple categories. ALL entry fees collected from our painting competition will be donated to charity.

Our miniature painting competition consists of three major categories and three additional categories.

Major Categories

Our miniature painting competition consists of three major categories with multiple entry types.

Fantasy


Entries in this category typically consist of settings where technology is non-existent or powered by magical means. Examples of popular fantasy settings include the Tolkien Universe, Warhammer Fantasy Battles / Age of Sigmar etc.

Sci-Fi


Entries in this category typically consist of settings where technology is prevalent and usually explores concepts beyond current day capabilities (ex. Faster than light travel, fully sentient A.I. etc). Examples of popular Sci-Fi settings include Warhammer 40,000, The Star Wars Universe.

Open


Open includes modern day, historical, and anything that doesn’t quite fit nicely into Fantasy and Sci-Fi. Examples include elements of the Marvel Universe, Gundam, and Historical.

Fantasy

Dive into a realm where technology takes a backseat to magic and mythical forces. In this category, explore settings untouched by modern tech, where magic rules supreme. These worlds invite you into stories rich with lore, bravery, and enchantment.

Sci-Fi

Venture into a galaxy where advanced technology and cosmic mysteries define existence. This category immerses you in universes where science and innovation lead the way. From starships navigating through deep space to civilizations harnessing the power of technology, these settings offer tales of discovery, conflict, and survival against the backdrop of the unknown.

Open

Modern day wonders, historicals, and everything else in between. Anything that does not play nicely with pure Sci-Fi or Fantasy and that walks it’s own path fits well in this category. Some examples include some elements of the Marvel Universe, some elements of Blood Bowl, historicals, and more!

Diorama


Diorama’s are now in a category of their own. Each entry requires a display board. Note: Diorama only have one entry type and will be judged against the other diorama entries.

Busts


Busts are now there own category. Note: Busts only have one entry type and will be judged against the other bust entries.

Beginner


New to painting? This category is for you! We love to support new artists. This category will have one overall winner.

Busts

The Busts category celebrates the art of capturing character and emotion in a single, focused piece. This category showcases the power of portrait work in miniature form, inviting spectators to connect with the figures on a personal level.

Dioramas

Dioramas offer a captivating window into entire worlds, meticulously crafted and richly detailed. In this category, artists construct immersive scenes that tell stories through landscapes, characters, and action frozen in time. Whether depicting a moment of historical significance, a scene from a beloved tale, or an imagined future, each diorama invites viewers on a visual journey, showcasing the artist’s ability to blend creativity with technical skill in creating miniature, three-dimensional masterpieces.

The Beginner category welcomes newcomers to the world of miniature painting, providing a supportive environment for those just starting their artistic journey. It’s a chance to showcase talent, learn from fellow artists, and gain confidence in painting techniques without the pressure of competing against seasoned veterans. This category celebrates growth, creativity, and the first steps toward becoming a skilled painter, making it the perfect launching pad for anyone eager to dive into the hobby. Single model, 54mm and smaller.

Entry Types for Fantasy, Sci-Fi, and Open

Each of these categories has multiple entry types. Note: Busts, Dioramas, and Beginners only have one entry type.

Single Model


Single model, 54mm and smaller

Large Scale


Single model, large scale or gaming-scale monster, mech, or large scale robot

Squad or Unit


Entries of this type are a set of models typically consisting of 5-10 models (however may exceed this). The total footprint for the Squad should not exceed 200mm x 200mm, in addition the total height for any model in the squad should not exceed 127mm.

Single bust, any size

No size restriction. One award in this category. Diorama depicting world building, fight or duel.

Beginner


Single model, 54mm and smaller

Apart from competition, Wicked Brush offers a unique opportunity to learn. Participate in workshops, watch live demonstrations, and receive feedback from experienced painters, all designed to help you refine your craft and take your skills to the next level.

Wicked Brush FAQs

You can drop off your Wicked Brush entry at registration.

Yes! A convention pass is required to enter the event.

Each entry requires a separate Wicked Brush ticket. Multiple entries encouraged. No single model can compete in multiple categories.

Judging will take place between 12pm – 5pm Saturday during each of our Wicked Dicey events, with the finalist entries receiving their medals after 12pm on Sunday.

Non finalists entries can be retrieved from the display area after 2pm on Sunday. Finalists can retrieve their entries after the conclusion of the awards ceremony which will take place in the evening on Sunday.
